Eastcombe Visit

Today, children from Eastcombe Primary School (a small rural school in the Cotswold Hills, Gloucester) visited Badock's Wood Primary to learn a little about life in a large city school.

Eastcombe children spent the morning in our Year 4, 5 and 6 classes, completing various activites, including spending some time in the Badock's computer suite learning email and swapping email addresses so the children can keep in contact in the future.

In the afternoon, Badock's Year 4 joined Eastcombe in the assembly hall to learn how to play a song on the ukulele - look out for a video of the performance in our gallery and on our Youtube channel soon.

We hope everybody from Eastcombe enjoyed their visit and hope our new friends visit again soon!

Announcement: School Closed 30/11/11

The National Union of Teachers (NUT), Association of Teachers and Lecturers (ATL), National Association of Headteachers (NAHT), National Association of School and Union of Women teachers (NASUWT), Unison and GMB have voted to hold a national strike on November 30th. This action is being taken as part of a campaign against proposals to make changes to public sector pensions.

Due to the number of people represented by these unions in school, the school will be closed for pupils on Wednesday 30th November. The Governors and Headteacher have made this decision in the best interests of the safety and welfare of all learners.

School will reopen as normal at 8.55a.m. on Thursday 1st December.

Badock's Children in Need Total is...

All of the activities held on Friday at Badock's Wood Primary, for the BBC Children in Need Appeal 2011 raised a grand total of:

Children in Need

This Friday, there will be various activities to raise money for BBC Children in Need.

Although children must wear their school uniform, they are also encouraged to wear something spotty with it. A 50p donation for this is welcome.

Also, there will be a 'guess the number of sweets in a jar' competition (10p a go) and a 'guess the number of spots on the teddy' competition (10p a go). A correct guess wins the sweets and teddy.

There will be spotty cakes on sale at break (20p each).

Remembrance Assembly

Today, Badock's Wood fell silent for a minute during assembly to remember those who lost their lives during wars.

Mr Willis told a story about how The Great War ended and demonstrated how popies grew from the mud left behind on the battle field.

Thank you to everyone who supported the cause by buying a poppy during the week and wearing it with pride.

Sports Day Reminder - 17th June

This Friday (17th June) will be our annual sports day.

Years 3, 4, 5 and 6 will in the morning, 9.30am start. Nursery, Reception, Years 1 and 2 will be in the afternoon, 1.00pm start.

Like last year, there will be numerous traditional track based events. There will be an area for parents to sit and watch and cheer, but please to do cross or walk on the track.

If it rains, the day will be postponed until later in the month; we will let you know the new date by newsletter and/or the website.

Year 6 Leavers Assembly

Less than one hour ago, parents, carers, children and friends crammed into the main hall to say goodbye to Year 6 who leave Badock's Wood today.

The special assembly started with Mr Willis sharing some of his favoruite books (because Year 6 are such avid readers) which held some messages for the leavers to think about.

After that, Miss Sims and Miss Walmsley presented each and every child with a dictionary that will hopefully be used at their secondary schools.

Finally, some children selected by their teachers and Mr Willis recieved medals and trophies for special contributions to Badock's Wood over the last few years.

Everyone wishes the Year 6 leavers good luck in the future.

Year 6 Leavers Play

This afternoon, the whole school community was treated to an early version of the Year 6 leavers play, 'The Twits'.

While only a dress rehearsal, all children, staff and other adults gathered in the main hall to watch the Year 6 rendition of the Roald Dahl classic. And what a cracking performance!

The whole school congratulates Year 6 on such a good performance and wishes them luck for the main performance tonight for parents, carers and friends.

Summer Big Breakfast

This morning, children, parents, friends and staff enjoyed a nice continental breakfast together to start the day and begin the end of a long summer term.

On offer was croissant, ham, cheese, juice, hot chocolate, tea and coffee. Yummy!

There was also a raffle, to raise money for school equipment, with many fantastic prizes. As always, Miss Fitzgerald and her band of merry helpers made the occasion a splendid affair with balloons, flowers and streamers decorating the playground.

Year 3/4 Visit Avon Country Park

Today children in Year 3 and 4 visited Avon Valley Country Park.

After the short coach journey, everybody was able to enjoy brilliant sunshine in beautiful park and farmland surroundings, with wide open spaces, riverside walks, animals play grounds and grasslands for picnics.

Sports Day 2010

Today children of all ages from Badock's Wood Primary School took part in the annual Sports Day.

Key Stage 2 children held their events in the morning and EYFS and Key Stage 1 in the afternoon. All the children took part in traditional races such as the a sprint, egg and spoon, obstacle, football dribble and skipping, amongst others.

Everyone who attended or took part said what a wonderful occasion it was. The best part was being able to sit along the track and watch and cheer for friends.

All the staff at Badock's thank Miss Correia for organising the day.

Sports Day Reminder

Don't forget, Sports Day is this Friday (25th June).

The older Key Stage 2 children (Years 3-6) will take part in the morning, starting about 9.30, and the younger children (Reception & Years 1-2) will take part in the afternoon, starting about 1.30).

On Friday, please make sure your child comes to school with PE kit (with trainers for running races), a cap to shade from the sun and a bottle of water (no fizzy drinks or glass bottles). If your child needs sun-cream, please apply this before they come to school – staff cannot be responsible for looking after or applying sun-cream.

This year, sports day will consist of many traditional running races on the track, including sprints, sack races, skipping races, obstacles races and many others. There will be an area for parents, carers and friends to sit near the finish line so you can cheer for your child. Since the day will be very busy, please stay in this area and do not cross or enter the track or child areas. If you bring younger children with you, please make sure they stay with you!

At the end of the day, please do not take your child home from the field. They need to return to class to collect their belongings and receive their annual reports.

If the weather turns to rain, we will postpone the day and hold it in the near future; please keep an eye on this website for further information.

Skipathon 2010

This afternoon, children of all ages at Badock's Wood Primary School took part in a sponsored Skipathon to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

Children had to skip using different techniques they had been learning and practising over the last few weeks.

One of the highlights of the afternoon was the whole school witnessing Mr Scaiff show off his recently acquired skipping skills!

Thanks to Miss Fitzgerald for organising the event and all those that helped out with much needed refreshments!

Year 6 Sponsored Walk

This afternoon, Year 6 took part in a sponsored walk to raise money to hire a limousine as part of their leaving celebrations in July.

In the searing heat (and with some children dressed in fancy dress!), they walk lap after lap around Badock's Wood and the (very large) field adjoining Badock's Wood, with refreshments provided my a recently returned Mrs Dibble.

Badock's Book Day 2010

This year, because of so many things happening in school, Badock's Wood children missed out on the chance to take part in World Book Day in March. To make up for this, Badock's Wood today held it's own 'Badock's Book Day'!

Children were encouraged to dress up as book characters, read and write stories (with a competition for the best story judged by Miss Walmsley) and attend book reading sessions held by different adults in different parts of the school during the day.

Easter Bonnet Parade 2010

Children from all classes of Badock’s Wood Primary School today took part in the annual Easter bonnet parade and competition.

Children came to school wearing their Easter bonnets (which had been made at home) for a chance to show off their creations and win a prize in a competition judged by Mrs Ford, the school secretary.

Sport Relief 2010

Today, many children, staff and other adults stayed behind after school to take part in the 'Sport Relief Mile', to raise money for this years Sport Relief appeal.

During the week, Miss Correia carefully measured out a whole mile around the school playground, fields and building. Unfortunately, when it came to the afternoon of the event, it absolutely poured with rain so Miss Correia and Mr Willis very quickly set up a circuit around the school hall and corridors in the warm and dry!

Children were sponsored by their friends and family to take part in the event and eventually raised well over £500!!!

At the end of the event, everybody enjoyed biscuits and squash!

Christmas Lunch 2009

For lunch today, the whole school enjoyed a full Christmas dinner!

With plates packed turkey, sausage and bacon, roast potatoes and lots of vegetables and gravy and then finished off with Xmas pudding and custard, a filling lunch was had by all!

Christmas Plays 2009

Today were the final performances of this years Christmas plays, with EYFS performing Christmas songs and Christmas Nativity, KS1 performing a play about the Littlest Christmas Tree and Years 3&4 and 5&6 singing songs, reciting poems and presenting information about different Christmas traditions around the world.

With Badock's Wood children shining yet again, a great time was had by the children and by all of those that watched!

Harvest Assembly 2009

Start of a New School Year!

Wow! What a busy start to the new school year!

A new ICT suite, new class learning blogs and social networking accounts on the website, a new teacher and so much more, it’s possibly been the busiest start to a school year ever.

First of all, Badock’s Wood School would like to welcome Mr Scaiff, our new Year 5 teacher, and Miss Ford, our new school secretary. We are sure that everyone will make them feel very welcome!

Secondly, in response to parents requests for the school to communicate more, a newsletter will now be sent home every other Thursday. This newsletter can also be downloaded from our website here...

Before and during the summer holidays, much time and money was spent in building a new state of the art ICT (computer) room for the children and, although there have been a few teething problems, we expect it to be up and running very soon. End of the Year!

Badock’s Wood Primary School today ended a busy year with a Continental Big Breakfast and a special Leavers Assembly.

These events came at the end of a really busy week which included both school and community events.

A week of ‘madness’ began last Friday with the annual school Barbecue, to which children, parents, carers and staff were all invited. Beginning at 6.30pm, good food, music and dancing was enjoyed by all!

A few days later on July 21st, a special retirement tea party, held for Mrs. Allan the school secretary, took place during the afternoon. Parents, children and colleagues both past and present were invited to share some food and drink with Mrs. Allan who retires this year after an amazing 17 years of service to Badock’s Wood Primary.

On July 22nd, Year 6 performed their end of year production to the whole school during the morning and to parents and adults during the evening. Based on the TV show ‘Britain’s Got Talent’, the Year 6 version, ‘Badock’s Got Talent’ included jokes, music, impersonations of celebrities and, of course, some genuine talent in the form of singing and dancing. Over 70 parents and adults watched the evening performance.

Finally, today started with a ‘Continental Big Breakfast’ attended by the usual Breakfast Club attendees, as well as many more children and adults. With tea, coffee, hot chocolate, croissants, ham, bread and toast and jam on the menu, as well as a raffle, a great time was had by all!

Later during the morning, a special ‘Leavers Assembly’ took place to say special goodbyes to all the adults and children who were leaving this year. First up were the LSA’s, including Mrs Harding, and Miss Burleton. Everyone also said goodbye to teacher Miss Leakey, who is leaving to travel and work in New Zealand. Of curse, there was an emotional goodbye to Mrs. Allan. Last, but certainly not least, the whole school said goodbye to Year 6, who will be starting new adventures at Secondary School in September. Each child was presented with a dictionary and there where extra awards for selected children who had demonstrated additional attributes this year.

New kitchen opened by Lord Mayor!

The Lord Mayor of Bristol visited Badock’s Wood to open the new school kitchen.

The new school kitchen took a few months to build and cost £170,000, but is now able to serve really healthy school meals.

A lucky group of children were asked to sit at the top table with the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress, Mrs. Susan Davies.

Reading Celebration

Badock’s Wood Primary School today celebrated the achievements of children who took part in both Reading Recovery and Better Reading Partners.

At a special event, attended by parents, volunteers, teachers and adults, 25 children received books and certificates for making such good progress.

Mrs Knight, the Badock’s Wood Reading Recovery teacher, was so pleased with the progress of the children involved she said, “The children are so enthusiastic and love reading now!”.

The intensive one-to-one support of the schemes has shown excellent results and will be continued next year.

Sports Day 2009

Badock’s Wood Primary School’s annual sports day took place today. The weather stayed fine and many parents, carers and adults came to watch the event.

Years 1, 2 and 3 took part during the morning, while Years 4, 5 and 6 had fun in the afternoon.

The sports included the traditional sports day races, including the sprint, long jump and egg and spoon. However, there were also more entertaining challenges such as the back-to-back balloon race and parachute racing.

‘Big Toddle’ raises money for Barnardo’s

The youngest children at Badock’s Wood, those in the Nursery, today took part in the ‘Big Toddle’ to raise money for Barnardo’s.

This short sponsored walk is the UK’s biggest charity event for children under 5 years old and was used as the children’s annual sports day.

The Nursery children walked around the park opposite the school while dressed in fancy dress! Many of the adults even dressed up - check out the photos to spot Mrs Clarke dressed up as a skeleton!

Animal Farm Nursery Trip

As part of the Nursery topic about animals, today Nursery visited the Animal Farm Adventure Park between Burnham-on-Sea and Weston-Super-Mare.

It was very exciting because it was the first time that some of the children had been on a very big coach!

At the farm, children had a chance to feed, touch and hold lots of different sorts of animals, such as goats, cows, sheep, rabbits, guinea pigs and turkeys!

Being an ‘adventure farm’, there were lots of slides and climbing frames to play on as well - great fun! Mrs. Clarke even had the chance to eat lots of food! Mr. Willis would probably have been jealous...

Year 3 and 4 ‘Brunel Day’

Today, children from Year 3 and 4 visited the nearby Clifton Suspension Bridge before traveling down into the city to walk around the SS Great Britain as part of their ‘Brunel Day’.

As part of their learning about Bristol during the Victorian period of History, Year 3 and 4 have been focussing on Brunel, a famous Victorian engineer who was responsible for designing and building both the suspension bridge and the SS Great Britain.

The day started with an early morning walk across the Clifton Suspension Bridge, where everyone marveled at the views of Bristol. Later on, everyone visited the SS Great Britain, an iron steam ship that is now a museum in the harbour in Bristol.

Peppa Pig’s Playtime Challenge

Children in the Nursery today took part in ‘Peppa Pig’s Playtime Challenge’.

Peppa Pig’s Playtime Challenge is an annual event where children collect sponsorship to complete a challenge. The challenge for 2009 was to learn and perform the Big Bing Bong Song.

Watching the performance were many proud mums and dads, as well as other family members and friends. Mr Willis and Miss Pingree even found the time to walk down to the Nursery to enjoy the performance.

The event raises money for Tommy’s baby charity and this year, Badock’s Wood children managed to collect an amazing £246.65!

Well done to everyone involved!

Easter Parade 2009

Children of all ages, from all years and classes of Badock’s Wood Primary School today took part in the annual Easter bonnet parade and competition.

Children came to school wearing their Easter bonnets which had been made at home for a chance to show off their creations and win a prize.

Amongst the colourful eggs and chicks bonnets were some really imaginative creations, including a whole rabbits head, a playground for Easter chicks and, Mr Vaisey’s personal favourite, a Doctor Who Dalek being controlled by chicks!

Red Nose Day 2009!

The usually green uniform of Badock’s Wood Primary School turned red today, as children paid 50p for the privilege of leaving uniform at home and wearing something red.

The day started in the Badock’s Wood Primary Breakfast Club, where children could make red noses and enjoy a healthy breakfast!

At lunchtime, children munched on handmade biscuits, baked fresh by the Badocks Wood canteen staff and decorated with faces and red nose cherries! Check out our Red nose Day photo gallery and see if you can spot the one of a kind biscuit decorated to look like Mr Willis!

Almost £100 pounds was raised.

Tree Planting

Today, children in Phase 2 (Years 2, 3 & 4), braved the frost, snow and bitterly cold wind to walk to the nearby Trymside Open Space to help members of TreeBristol, Trees for Cities and the Forest of Avon, along with volunteers from HSBC, plant new trees and hedges to improve the local environment.

There was even a visit by the Lord Mayor, who helped plant the trees and hundreds of hedging whips around the boundary of the large open space surrounding the River Trym.

Badock's Wood Given Thumbs Up!

After a recent monitoring visit from an HMI Inspector, a year after the school was taken out of special measures, Badock's Wood Primary School received the fantastic news that further progress has been made thanks to new Head Teacher Mr Willis and Deputy Miss Pingree.

Mo Roberts, the visiting Inspector, said, “Behaviour, attendance, teaching and learning are all much better. The school has begun to move forward on all the issues raised at the last inspection.”

Mr Willis, Head Teacher, said, “This report is just the start of our journey.”

Everyone at Badocks Wood Primary is excited about and looking forward to the future.

New Website Launched!

Today, the ‘Webclub’ at Badocks Wood Primary School is proud to announce the launch of a brand new website, Badocks Wood Primary Online.

With more news, photos, videos and information than ever before, Badocks Wood Primary Online is set to become a huge resource for pupils, parents, staff and internet visitors.

There are pages of information for adults and parents, as well as special pages all about the pupils and children at Badocks Wood and the work they do. There are also some fun and educational games to play!

Visit our ever growing learning zone with activities and games to help with Literacy, Numeracy, Science and a whole range of other subjects.

‘Anti-Bullying Week’ Balloon Release

To end a week full of activities based on Anti-Bullying, everyone at Badock's Wood Primary School met in the playground to release balloons.

Mrs Dibble, who arranged the event, said, “I am so pleased that everyone enjoyed themselves, while making pledges to help stop bullying.”

Science Week a Huge Success!

On the week beginning 10th March 2008, Badock’s Wood Primary School hosted a Science Week where children took part in a range of activities, experiments and investigations.

All children, from the eldest in Year 6 all the way down to the youngest in Nursery, used a range of materials and equipment including water, soil, salt, wires, bulbs, beans, cress and even spaghetti, amongst other things, to answer a range of questions set by their teachers.

Out of Special Measures!

Badock's Wood Primary School is very proud to announce that it has been removed from the Special Measures OFSTED category. Staff and children are delighted and everyone is looking forward to moving the school forward.

Headteacher Miss Dawn Cotter said, “I'm delighted that Badock's Wood has been removed from special measures. There has been a tremendous amount of hard work put in by teachers, governors, parents and pupils to turn things around and this report is a clear sign that we are heading in the right direction.”

Chair of Governors Ms Linda Waldren said, “This report is fantastic news - the hard work of everyone associated with the school has paid off. This report provides us with a platform to improve further.”
