Newsletter September 21st
Dear parents, carers and friends,
Saturday marks the official start of Autumn, but, to be quite honest, so settled and productive has the start to this year been, it seems a million years since the summer!
We have already had some exciting events and some great news. Thank you all so much for your efforts on Pirate Day. The costumes were amazing, and the work of the children was excellent. Next week, Monday 24th September marks Roald Dahl day, which the children will mark with celebrating some of his work.
Attendance was really worth celebrating last year. We had 8 children who scored 100% attendance, but added to that we had a further 37 who secured Gold attendance (above 98%), 43 pupils secured silver (above 96%) and 16 secured Bronze (above 94%). We will continue with the self-attendance scheme this year, as so many children benefitted from it, and it gave us the chance to communicate with parents of good attenders as well. In next week’s praise assembly, which will be on Thursday (“Why Thursday?” I hear you ask. Read on friend…) we will reward all of those brilliant gold, silver and bronze attenders.
One stage further, we have already had some classes this year with 100% attendance for the week (albeit a short week) which is something we never managed in the whole of last year. For week one this was Mr Davies’ class, and, in their first ever week of school, Miss Rubery’s class scored 100% as well. Brilliant news everyone – keep it going!
Praise will be on Thursday next week because – as we mentioned previously – Friday 28th September is an Inset day, and school is closed to children. School will reopen, as normal, on Monday 1st October.
Car park – thank you all so much for using the new car parking arrangements. Can you all please follow a simple rule – when the gates are closed, then the car park is closed, as we are trying to protect the safety of children and pedestrians using these exits. Anyone who opens the gates during these times will be challenged.
Finally, thank you all so much in helping to make the start of term so positive: attendance is really promising, uniform is dazzlingly smart and the attitude of the children has been delightful – we are all commenting on how enthusiastic they are in class, and how much fun they bring to playtimes and lunchtimes, which have been enormously enjoyable.
Have a great weekend everyone.
Yours faithfully,
Zak Willis

Talk Like a Pirate Day
Wow, what a day we had.
So many children and adults made a great effort to dress like a pirate today. School was buzzing with 'ooo's' and 'arrrrr's'.
Displays will be popping up around school with pictures and evidence of the day, make sure you have a look around the school.
Key Stage 2 enjoyed a 'treasure hunt' in the afternoon, the winning class to earn a treat will be announced in assembly on Thursday.

September Newsletter
6th September 2012
Dear parents, carers and friends,
A warm welcome back to another academic year. You will have noticed new signage going up as our partnership with the Children’s Centre is realised, and we have many exciting events coming up to celebrate this new relationship (more of this later).
Due to the efforts of the staff, the school already looks amazing, made even better by the children in the smartest uniform I can recall in all my time here. Standing at the front of assembly on Tuesday was a joy, looking out on a sea of smiling faces in smart, crisp uniform. Thank you all so much.
Last year’s attendance was easily the best in my time here, and (we believe) the best since the year 2000, standing at 92.4%. This is an incredible achievement, and we are so grateful for all your efforts. We will continue to work closely with Education Welfare Services to promote positive attendance – I hope to write to you soon with the precise number of Gold, Silver and Bronze awards. What I can tell you is that we had an amazing 8 pupils whose attendance was 100% for the whole year. Attendance thus far has been good, but some people still have alarms set to holiday time and are coming in late (after 8.55). Please remember that late marks affect everyone, and being on time for school is essential.
Our first exciting event this year takes place tomorrow afternoon – Friday 7th. To celebrate the creation of the new Badock’s Wood Communtiy Primary School and Children’s Centre, we will be visited by the Lord Mayor, Cllr Peter Main. He will come to the school (around 1.45) and then walk from the school to the children’s centre, placing the final links in a giant paper chain linking the two sites. We will take key stage 2 pupils out to the route, and the police will be on hand to ensure the safety of all. If you do not want your child to take part, please let me know and we can make alternative arrangements.
Advance warning – school is closed on Friday 28th September for Inset training. (If you ever wondered what staff get up to on inset, visit the news section of our website.)
So, here’s to what promises to be another exciting year in the history of (the now enlarged) Badock’s Wood. Once again, we look forward to working with you all to provide the very best we can for the children of Southmead.
Yours faithfully,
Zak Willis

INSET
Teachers were in school on Monday learning lots of new things ready for the new academic year.
We spent the day together as a new team, Badock's Wood Community Primary School and Children's Centre.
As we had spent of time listening and learning already Mr Willis felt that we were capable of a little bit more learning so set us the challenge to learn the steps to a new dance.
Only a few staff knew the dance and it was our job as a team to learn it and get everyone involved to perform it. Working together was vital.
Here is the video evidence of our success.
